Tom “reptile” linthicum
Tom “Reptile” Linthicum is renowned as the pioneer of Lake Tahoe Marathon swimming. His journey began long before he ever set foot in Tahoe’s alpine waters. Tom found solace and purpose in the waters of San Francisco Bay, swimming alone for relief and reflection before discovering the South End Rowing Club. Among the spirited “Sunrisers,” Tom embraced the camaraderie and mentorship that would shape his approach to both swimming and life. His nickname, “Reptile,” was born from his embrace of the “reptile brain” concept to withstand the Bay’s frigid temperatures—a mindset that quickly became legendary among fellow swimmers.
Tom’s passion for open water swimming led him to tackle ambitious swims beyond Tahoe, including the iconic Alcatraz round-trip and the “Alagate Swim” from Alameda to the Golden Gate Bridge. These feats forged his resilience and deepened his commitment to supporting others, whether by piloting, crewing, or simply offering encouragement. When Tom turned his focus to Lake Tahoe, he not only completed epic swims—such as the 20.2-mile length crossing—but also became the region’s most prolific pilot, earning him the title “King of Tahoe.” He is recognized for piloting more miles than anyone else, and for his pivotal role in establishing legendary swim routes such as “The Godfather” and “Thunderbird.”
As the founder of the Lake Tahoe Marathon Swimming Federation (LTMSF), Tom has worked to elevate the safety and documentation standards for marathon swims in the region, ensuring that every swimmer’s achievement is recorded and celebrated. His dedication to the sport and his belief in the transformative power of open water continue to inspire swimmers worldwide. Through his leadership and generosity, Tom has made Lake Tahoe’s pristine waters accessible to all, cementing his legacy as a true ambassador for the magic of open water swimming.
